Waitomo Caves

15 Aug 2013

Glowworm cavesI love going to Waitomo to explore the many underground caves.  This is a great all season activity.  We went to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves and our guide sang an Italian opera in the huge cathedral caverns.  The acoustics are perfect and he told us they have weddings and concerts in the caves for this purpose.  We then took an underground tour which was beautiful with all of the limestone sculptures handing from the ceiling.  Then to a boat where you float along in the dark with sections brightly lit by glowworms.  I also saw my first…and I hope my last Weta insect.

My step son visited from the states and wanted to go to the Waitomo caves for more adventurous activities.   He talked me into Black Water Rafting where you float along underground rivers in inner-tubes.  It gets pretty crazy with the rapids and waterfalls but very exciting.  There are also adventures such as abseiling into the caves, flying fox, climbing and night black water rafting for the very brave.  Whatever you choose to do, this is an adventure that is 30 million years in the making and will not disappoint.
